Grammar Explanation - THERE IS/ ARE/WAS/WERE

Unidade 6  O VERBO HAVER / THERE BE

Sabemos que na língua portuguesa utilizamos os auxiliares ter e haver para formar os tempos compostos: tenho aprendido, havia estudado, terei partido. Na língua inglesa, porém, só podemos usar o verbo ter (to have), pois o verbo haver propriamente não existe.

O inglês utiliza um recurso que substitui o verbo haver, mas apenas no sentido de existir. Não é possível utilizá-lo para formar tempos compostos! Trata-se da combinação da palavra there (que normalmente significa lá, ali, mas aqui não tem significado) com o verbo to be: there be.

Surge daí um pequeno problema de concordância, pois ela não se dá da mesma forma nas duas línguas.

Em português, o verbo haver, com sentido de existir, é impessoal e, portanto, não tem sujeito. O verbo fica na 3ª pessoa do singular.

Há uma flor no vaso,

Há dez flores no vaso.

Em inglês, porém, a concordância se faz com o substantivo que segue there be, ou seja, se o substantivo estiver no plural, o verbo to be também deverá estar no plural.

There is one flower in the vase.

There are ten flowers in the vase.

Haverá uma festa na casa da Joana.

There will be many people at the party.

Haverá muitas pessoas na festa.

Forma negativa:                        is not (isn´t) – are not (aren´t)           
                                 There      Was not ( wasn´t ) – Were not (weren´t)

                                                Will not be ( won´t be)

There isn 't any sugar in the sugar bowl.

Não há (nenhum) açúcar no açucareiro.

There aren't many books on the shelf.

 Não há muitos livros na prateleira.

There wasn´t single flower in the garden. Não havia uma única flor no jardim.

At that time, there weren't (any) cars and buses. Naquele tempo, não havia carros nem ônibus.

There won't be a test this week.  Não haverá prova esta semana.
